Tanabe VLHH-64A / 74A

The Tanabe VLHH-64A and 74A are V-type, air-cooled, three-stage reciprocating compressors used mainly to fill the starting air receivers of marine diesel engines (max. 3.92 MPa). They are V-belt or direct driven, with forced lubrication of the bearings by a gear oil pump and a separate lubricator for the 2nd-stage cylinder. Automatic start/stop works from a pressure switch with an unloader solenoid valve that also purges the stage drains. The manual covers installation, test run, daily operation, a fault table, the maintenance chart, tightening torques, clearance tables and the recommended oils.

Manual start and stop
- Open the drain valve of each stage. 29. lpp.
- Switch on the main power, then the operating power. 29. lpp.
- When the compressor runs, close the stage drain valves to start loading; watch temperature, sound and current. 29. lpp.
- To stop: unload by opening the air tank drain or the delivery stop valve, switch off operating power then main power. 29. lpp.
- Drain the air tank and drain separator, then close their valves. 29. lpp.
Crankcase oil change
- Run the compressor warm and stop it; isolate power and release pressure. 44. lpp.Hot surfaces and pressure may remain
- Drain all oil while warm. 44. lpp.
- Wash the oil screen in clean flushing oil. 44. lpp.
- Fill fresh ISO VG 100 oil to level H; repeat at 50 h and 100 h on a new compressor, then every 500 h. 44. lpp.
Air valve inspection
- Remove the pipes, cylinder head and valve assembly. 38. lpp.
- Wipe the valve and check for carbon or foreign matter; if dirty, dismantle and clean with a soft brush. 38. lpp.
- Do not damage the seat; do not fit plates or springs upside down. 38. lpp.
- Refit with new valve seat gaskets held by grease; tighten the head diagonally to 900 kgf·cm. 38. lpp.
