Westfalia OSA 7

Self-cleaning centrifugal oil separator (lube oil purifier)

Westfalia OSA 7 is a high-speed disc-stack centrifuge with a self-cleaning bowl, used on board to purify main engine lubricating oil (and other mineral oils). The bowl works as a purifier (oil-water-solids, with a regulating ring that sets the water outlet) or as a clarifier (water-free oil, smallest regulating ring). A hydraulically operated sliding piston opens the bowl for de-sludging in seconds using operating water; a centrifugal clutch and worm gear drive the bowl at 8520 rpm, and an attached gear pump feeds dirty oil. The manual covers technical data, operating principles, start-up, de-sludging and stopping, bowl assembly and dismantling, regulating ring selection, cleaning, lubrication and maintenance schedule, fault finding, gear parts, clutch, motor and the full parts list with part numbers.

Mga maintenance procedure

Starting with the purifier bowl

  1. Release the brake (handle clockwise), check the bowl turns by hand, close the hood and fit the centripetal pump connection (left-hand thread). p. 29
  2. Check gear oil is at the upper third of the sight glass. p. 29
  3. Start the motor and wait 2–5 minutes until the bowl reaches rated speed; watch the revolution indicator. p. 30
  4. Close the bowl: operating water open 10 s, closed 20 s, then three times open 1 s / closed 10 s. p. 30
  5. Fill the bowl with warm water until it shows at the water outlet; water from the sludge outlet means the bowl leaks: open operating water 10 s and repeat closing. p. 30
  6. Heat the bowl with hot fresh water, then throttle make-up water to the amount for the oil type. p. 30
Diesel engine lube oil: 2–5 % of throughput
  7. Heat the oil to separating temperature and open the oil feed; set the clean oil back pressure to 1.5 bar. p. 31
  8. Check water, oil and sludge outlets for correct bowl function. p. 31

De-sludging the purifier bowl

  1. In plants without circulation switch off the oil pre-heater; close oil supply and discharge. p. 32
  2. Open operating water 10 s, close 20 s, then three times open 1 s / close 10 s to re-seal. p. 32
  3. If solids remain, flush: fill the bowl with hot water and de-sludge again for about 10 s. p. 32
  4. Restore the water seal with hot water, restart heating and slowly reopen oil discharge and supply; watch water and sludge outlets. p. 32

Stopping the separator (purifier bowl)

  1. Switch off the oil pre-heater and keep feeding a few minutes; then stop dirty oil supply and close the clean oil discharge. p. 33
  2. De-sludge, then fill with water and flush de-sludge to clear residual solids; make sure operating water is closed. p. 33
  3. Close make-up water, switch off the water pre-heater and the motor, apply the brake. p. 33
  4. Wait until the revolution indicator disc has stopped before loosening any part. p. 33
Never open the separator while the bowl is still turning

Assembling the bowl

  1. Clean all contact surfaces; never mix parts of different bowls; keep all 0 marks in line. p. 34
  2. Fit gaskets 308 and 304, grease guide surfaces with MoS2 paste + grease (1:4), warm the sliding piston 5 min with hot water and place it on the bowl bottom. p. 35
Never heat bowl parts with a torch
  3. Lower the sealing-chamber bottom with jack 423 until the pin engages; screw in the threaded ring. p. 35
  4. Place the bowl bottom on the spindle with jack 411, tighten spindle nut 321 (left-hand thread), fit wear liner 305. p. 36
  5. Stack discs on the distributor in numerical order, fit the separating disc, gasket 326 and centripetal pump. p. 36
  6. Fit the bowl top with lifting tongs, screw in lock ring 313 by hand (left-hand thread) and tighten with annular wrench 413 until 0 marks align. p. 38
  7. Fit gasket 318, the selected regulating ring and the small lock ring with hook wrench 422. p. 38

Choosing the regulating ring

  1. Use a small-diameter ring for heavy oil and a large-diameter ring for light oil; determine it from the density diagram or by trial. p. 39
  2. Ring too large: oil in the water discharge or broken water seal. Ring too small: water in the clean oil. p. 40
  3. For clarifier operation fit the smallest ring (45 mm) and never feed water. p. 42
